For most of my adult life, I believed weight loss had to be extreme to work. Crash diets, skipping meals, endless cardio—none of it lasted.
I’m Ananya (name changed for privacy), a 30-year-old software engineer working in Hyderabad, and at the beginning of 2026 I weighed about 70 kg. Sitting for long hours coding, irregular meals, and frequent food delivery had slowly pushed my weight up over the years.
What finally worked for me was not a “diet” at all. It was a simple, scientific approach to calorie control and consistency. Within six weeks I lost 6 kg, and more importantly, I found a routine I could actually sustain.
Here’s exactly how it happened.
The Turning Point: Understanding the Science of Weight Loss
The first thing I learned was something very basic but powerful:
Fat loss happens when your body consistently burns more calories than it consumes.
This is called a calorie deficit. Research in nutrition science shows that a moderate deficit of 300–500 kcal per day can lead to gradual, sustainable fat loss without harming metabolism or energy levels.
Instead of trying extreme diets, I decided to focus on one small daily change that created a predictable calorie deficit.
That change was replacing my breakfast with a structured, portion-controlled meal replacement.
My Simple Strategy: Replacing One Meal Per Day
I volunteered to take Neumeal (as part of their pre-launch offer), a nutritionally balanced meal replacement that provides about 200 kcal per serving.
Before this, my typical breakfast looked like this:
- Bread omelette + coffee (~350 kcal)
-
Or sometimes nothing… both these followed by overeating later.
By switching to a 200 kcal meal replacement, I was automatically cutting 150–250 calories every morning.
That alone created a consistent calorie deficit and more importantly i was keeping myself full and avoiding overeating, thus reducing about 500 Kcal overall per day.
My Morning Routine
My breakfast routine quickly became simple and convenient.
Most days I prepared it like this:
Protein shaker recipe
- 2 scoop Neumeal powder
- 250 ml milk
- 250 ml water
- Shake for 10–15 seconds
Total calories: ~200 kcal
On busy days I simply carried the shaker to the office and had breakfast at my desk.
As someone who works long hours in tech, this convenience made it much easier to stay consistent.
Week-by-Week Progress
Weeks 1–2: Slow but encouraging
The first two weeks were honestly a little discouraging.
My weight dropped from 70 kg to about 69 kg.
Just 1 kg in two weeks.
But I reminded myself that healthy weight loss is usually 0.5–1 kg per week, so I kept going.
What I did notice was:
- No mid-morning hunger
- More stable energy at work
- Fewer sugar cravings
Weeks 3–6: The momentum phase
After my body adapted to the routine, weight loss became more consistent.
I started losing about 0.7–0.8 kg per week.
By the end of 6 weeks, my weight was:
64 kg
Total loss: ~6 kg in 1.5 months
And unlike my previous diets, I never felt like I was starving.
My Vegetarian Daily Diet Plan
Since I’m vegetarian, my goal was to keep meals balanced with protein, fiber, and controlled portions.
Breakfast (~200 kcal)
Meal replacement shake:
- Neumeal + milk + water
- I brought two flavours and used it alternately, i like the both the nutty and also surprisingly take spicy also in the morning and felt extremely good
- I used to have a midmeal snack before, but i don't need it anymore since i am comfortably full till lunch time
Lunch (~400–450 kcal)
Typical office lunch looked like:
- 2 whole wheat rotis
- 1 bowl dal or rajma
- 1 bowl vegetable sabzi
- Salad
Evening Snack (~100 kcal)
- Buttermilk or green tea- without sugar
- Handful roasted chana or peanuts/ sometimes one samosa or any snack
Dinner (~350–400 kcal)
Light vegetarian dinner OR Neumeal dinner:
- Vegetable khichdi
- Or paneer + vegetables + 1 roti
- Or tofu stir fry
- OR somedays i take neumeal spicy meal replacer
Other Small Habits That Helped
I didn’t make drastic lifestyle changes. Just a few practical ones.
1. Walking whenever possible
About 7,000–8,000 steps per day. I count my steps during work and try to walk wherever possible.
2. Drinking more water
Around 2–2.5 liters daily. This surprisingly helped reduce unnecessary snacking. I follow the mindful eating sessions of neumeal in their channel and follow whatever possible for me.
3. Consistency over perfection
If I missed a day or had a heavy dinner, I didn’t panic. I just returned to the routine the next day.
Why the Meal Replacement Worked for Me
Looking back, the success came from three things.
1. Predictable calorie control
A 200 kcal meal made it easy to maintain a daily deficit.
2. Convenience for busy professionals
As a software engineer, mornings are chaotic.
A 30-second shake eliminated the need to cook or order food.
3. Nutritional balance
Unlike skipping meals, the meal replacement provided probiotics, protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals, which helped maintain energy levels, gave satiety and also probably richer than regular meals.
What My Weight Loss Looks Like Today
After six weeks:
- Starting weight: 70 kg
- Current weight: 64 kg
- Total fat loss: 6 kg
More importantly:
- My clothes fit better
- My energy levels are higher
- I no longer feel trapped in diet cycles
My Advice to Anyone Starting Their Weight Loss Journey
If you're overweight and struggling to lose weight, here’s what I wish someone told me earlier:
You don’t need extreme diets.
Start with one sustainable habit that creates a small daily calorie deficit.
For me, it was simply replacing breakfast with a 200 kcal meal replacement shake and sticking to a balanced vegetarian diet.
Small changes, done consistently, can produce surprisingly powerful results.
Sustainable fat loss isn’t about perfection.
It’s about systems that fit your real life.
